The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection has moved to hold former Trump adviser Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress after he defied an order to testify on the attack on the US Capitol.
Lawmakers issued a subpoena to the former White House strategist seeking evidence of his possible involvement in coordinating the deadly U.S. Capitol assault aimed at keeping Donald Trump in office, and the select committee will vote Tuesday whether to hold him in contempt for refusing to comply with their order.
“Mr. Bannon has declined to cooperate with the Select Committee and is instead hiding behind the former President’s insufficient, blanket, and vague statements regarding privileges he has purported to invoke,” said committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS). “We reject his position entirely. The Select Committee will not tolerate defiance of our subpoenas, so we must move forward with proceedings to refer Mr. Bannon for criminal contempt.”
After the select committee adopts a contempt report, it will be referred to the U.S. House of Representatives for a vote and then handed over to the U.S. Attorney’s office for prosecution.
