It was confirmed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on Wednesday that people who have died and were eligible for a stimulus payment must have a family member return the money to the government.
The IRS said if someone died before receiving a payment, that money should be sent back to the agency.
“Return the entire payment unless the payment was made to joint filers and one spouse had not died before receipt of the payment, in which case, you only need to return the portion of the payment made on account of the decedent,” the agency said.
According to Politico, Congress will likely overturn the decision made by the IRS as part of another coronavirus relief plan under consideration.
