President Trump said on Sunday that he’s serious about serving a third term, mentioning that there are “methods” he could use to stay in power beyond his second term. This is the second time in less than three weeks he’s raised the idea.
During a phone interview with NBC News, anchor Kristen Welker asked Trump if he was joking about a third term. Trump responded, “No, no I’m not joking.”
Trump also mentioned that his poll numbers are higher than any other Republican candidate in the last 100 years, stating, “We’re in the high 70s in many polls, in the real polls, and you see that. And, and you know, we’re very popular. And you know, a lot of people would like me to do that.”
However, he added, “But, I mean, I basically tell them, we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has brought up a third term. He previously hinted at the idea during a St. Patrick’s Day event on March 12 with House Speaker Mike Johnson, Ireland’s leader Taoiseach Micheál Martin, and other lawmakers.
When Welker asked Trump how he would make a third term happen, Trump replied, “There are, there are methods which you could do it, as you know.”
Welker then asked if a scenario where another president (like President Vance) wins and then passes the baton to Trump could work. Trump said, “Well, that’s one. But there are others too,” but didn’t give any other examples.
Trump also said he enjoys being president after Welker pointed out that the presidency is a tough job.
When asked if he would ever consider passing the baton to Vice President Vance, Trump said, “It’s too early … to even think about it.”
