Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) is accusing the Trump administration of breaking the law and using a controversial deportation case to cover up the economic damage caused by its own trade policies.
“They have picked out this case and this man because it’s about a subject that they want to keep in the news,” Klobuchar said on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, referring to the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident. “So, it’s even more cynical than just flaunting the law.”
“They’re doing it because they want to distract people from the fact that our economy is in a tailspin thanks to them, their tariffs,” she said.
Abrego Garcia was deported by the Trump administration despite a Supreme Court order telling officials to “facilitate” his return. Instead of following the ruling, the administration has delayed and blamed El Salvador for the holdup.
Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) traveled to El Salvador to meet with Abrego Garcia, showing how serious Democrats believe the situation is. Klobuchar pointed out that the administration seems to be selectively choosing when to follow the law.
“I think it’s really important for people to realize they’re following the law in other cases, they’ve just decided not to follow the law with this guy,” she said.
The White House’s actions come as President Trump faces increasing criticism over the fallout from his tariffs, which have rattled markets and raised concerns about long-term economic harm. Critics argue that focusing media attention on immigration and deportations is a calculated move to steer the conversation away from growing economic problems.
Klobuchar didn’t hold back: the administration isn’t just ignoring the law, she said — it’s using a man’s life as a political distraction.
