Kaya Walker, the president of the New York University College Republicans, was forced to resign after calling Barron Trump, President Donald Trump’s youngest son, an “oddity on campus” and suggesting he “doesn’t really belong here.”
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Walker described Barron as “sort of like an oddity on campus,” explaining that he simply “goes to class, he goes home.” She also shared that one of her professors joked Barron “doesn’t really belong here,” referring to the school’s liberal atmosphere.
In response to her comments, the College Republicans of America (CRA) issued a statement saying Walker’s remarks did not reflect the organization’s values. Although they criticized the media’s portrayal of her comments, they still called them “inappropriate.”
“We are working with the NYU chapter to ensure a smooth transition in leadership,” the CRA said. “Our goal is to continue to promote the principles of the Republican Party and the conservative movement in a way that reflects well on our organization.”
The CRA also referenced their endorsement of Donald Trump in January 2024, breaking from 100 years of tradition. “Our support for President Trump has been a core part of our organization,” they stated.
Walker has not publicly commented on her resignation or the fallout from her remarks.
In response to the situation, the College Republicans extended an invitation to Barron Trump to join their group. CRA President Will Donahue said in a statement, “Barron Trump represents the future of the conservative movement, and we would be honored to have him join College Republicans of America. He’s shown the resilience and leadership we value, and we’d love for him to help shape the future of our party.”
Barron’s classmates had varying opinions of him. One student recalled inviting Barron to play basketball, but believed he couldn’t join because of Secret Service protection. Another student, Maria Arana, said she’d noticed a shift in campus politics. “I’ve seen a lot of people just kind of keep it more to themselves,” she said.
In contrast, several prominent figures have spoken highly of Barron. Eric Trump called him “probably the most watched bachelor in the world,” and Elon Musk shared that they had discussed “consciousness and video games” over Thanksgiving dinner. Barron’s tailor described him as “well beyond his years” and found him “fascinating to talk to.”
