On Sunday, the Israeli Defense Forces reported the discovery of the largest Hamas tunnel found to date in the northern region of Gaza. This extensive structure, spanning approximately 2.5 miles, is wide enough to facilitate the passage of vehicles.
The entrance to the tunnel is situated just 400 meters (1,310 feet) from the Erez Crossing, a crucial point used by Gazans for daily entry into Israel, particularly for work and medical treatment in Israeli hospitals. The tunnel project was led by Mohammad Sinwar, the brother of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, and the commander of Hamas’ Khan Yunis Battalion, according to IDF.
Recent photos and videos released by the Israeli military depict the cylindrical tunnel, which they claim was seized “a few weeks ago.” The tunnel is well-equipped with communication systems, air ventilation, and electricity. It’s noteworthy that the tunnel does not extend across the northern border of Gaza but terminates approximately 400 meters from the now-closed Erez Crossing.
