Donald Trump has brought back one of his strangest campaign stories — and the internet was ready for it.
During a White House Rose Garden dinner Thursday, Trump once again launched into his bizarre hypothetical involving an electric boat, electrocution and a bunch of nearby sharks.
Yes, that story.
Trump was discussing his opposition to electric boats when he recalled a conversation he said he had with the owner of a boat company in South Carolina.
“I said, ‘Let me ask you a question: If you get a little leak and the water starts coming in your boat and you’re in electric, do you get electrocuted or not?’” Trump said.
According to Trump, the boat owner responded, “You know, nobody’s ever asked me that question.”
Trump then posed the question that has now become one of his recurring campaign-era stories.
“So if I’m in an electric boat and I see I’m going down and the water’s pouring in, so I know I’m gonna be electrocuted, but five yards away there are sharks, do I take the electrocution or do I go swimming with the sharks?” Trump asked.
“And you know what my answer was? I’ll take the electrocution. OK? I’ll take the electric.”
Trump wasn’t even pretending this was a new story.
He reminded the audience that he used to tell it during the campaign, saying he did so because it was “driving the press crazy” and that people found it amusing.
And that’s exactly what happened again.
Social media users quickly revived the jokes about Trump’s shark fixation and his repeated return to the same electric-boat scenario.
One commentator simply wrote, “Time for another cognitive test,” while others mocked Trump for once again wandering into the same strange electrocution-versus-sharks hypothetical.
The story has been part of Trump’s repertoire since at least the 2023 campaign. He has repeatedly used versions of the scenario while attacking electric boats and other policies associated with electric vehicles.
But Thursday’s version came with an added dose of irony.
Trump was at the White House to celebrate executive actions rolling back federal restrictions affecting boaters, anglers and fishing. He complained about restrictions that he said were designed to protect wildlife, adding, “they didn’t want to hurt sharks.”
So naturally, the president ended up talking about sharks again.
Trump’s dislike of the animals is hardly new. He has previously said he is “not a big fan of sharks,” and the subject has repeatedly surfaced in his speeches and campaign remarks.
The electric-boat argument itself also contains a questionable premise: electrical hazards on boats aren’t limited to vessels powered entirely by electricity. Electrical faults involving boats, docks and shore-power systems can create dangerous conditions in the water.
But the factual details of boating safety weren’t really the point Thursday.
Trump was reviving a story he knows has already become a recurring spectacle. And judging by the reaction online, the bizarre electrocution-versus-sharks saga was enough to have the internet calling for medical intervention.
