A new report revealed on Tuesday that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had to cancel his last trip to Europe after Luxembourg’s foreign minister and top European Union officials declined to meet him.
According to Reuters, the trip was canceled after the attack on the U.S. Capitol by thousands of Trump supporters shocked many world leaders and U.S. allies.
The publication reported that “Pompeo had originally planned to go to Luxembourg, but that leg of the trip was scrapped, one diplomatic source said, after officials there showed reluctance to grant him appointments.”
One diplomatic source said allies were “embarrassed” by Pompeo after the violence in Washington last Wednesday.
While Pompeo did condemn the violence at the U.S. Capitol, he refused to reference Donald Trump’s role in the matter.
Appalled by the violence, Luxembourg’s Jean Asselborn had called Trump a “criminal” and a “political pyromaniac” on RTL Radio the next day.
