Donald Trump is now turning on one of his most loyal media allies as the fallout from Republicans’ crushing midterm defeat spreads. With his party losing control of both chambers of Congress, Trump is scrambling to find someone else to blame—and Fox News has landed squarely in his crosshairs. The president who once treated the network as his political megaphone is now accusing it of helping bring about his party’s election disaster.
After Republicans suffered sweeping defeats in Tuesday’s midterms, Trump took to Truth Social to attack the conservative network, accusing it of contributing to the losses by giving Democratic voices airtime.
His target was former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who appeared on Fox News to discuss the election results. Trump called him the “Worst Mayor in the History of New York City” and blasted the network for allowing him to criticize the administration. “FoxNews bears responsibility for these losses,” Trump declared, accusing the channel of repeatedly putting Democratic opposition figures on the air.
Trump wasn’t finished. He later called into Fox News on election night and insisted Republicans would have performed much better if he had been on the ballot. In other words, the president who has spent years demanding credit for his party’s victories is now distancing himself from its defeats.
The election results were a major blow to Republicans. Democrats won control of both the House and Senate, setting up a difficult final two years of Trump’s presidency, with congressional investigations, oversight battles, and a Democratic majority standing in the way of his agenda.
Trump’s relationship with Fox News has always been complicated. He has filled his administration with former network personalities while repeatedly attacking the channel whenever its coverage or commentary fails to meet his expectations. Now, after a devastating election night, even one of his most reliable media allies is apparently a convenient target. When things go well, Trump wants the credit. When they don’t, somebody else must be responsible.
