Donald Trump has never been known for subtlety, and now the Oval Office is starting to look more like one of his resorts than the workplace of an American president.
A newly released video from White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino gave Americans a fresh look inside Trump’s dramatically redesigned Oval Office—and the internet wasted no time weighing in.
The footage reveals a room overflowing with gold trim, gilded decorations, and flashy embellishments covering nearly every available surface. Within hours, social media users were mocking what many described as a “tacky,” “gaudy,” and “over-the-top” makeover that looked more like a casino lobby or Mar-a-Lago than the historic office occupied by U.S. presidents.
The extravagant redesign isn’t exactly a surprise.
According to the book Regime Change by New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, Trump became so obsessed with remaking the Oval Office that he personally glued gold decorations onto the fireplace mantel himself.
The authors wrote that Trump used superglue to attach gilded appliqués, adding that members of his inner circle weren’t surprised to see the president handling the decorating himself because he has long preferred his own taste over everyone else’s.
The Oval Office is only one piece of Trump’s broader White House makeover.
Over the past year, gold accents have spread throughout the executive mansion, including outside the Oval Office itself. Trump also bulldozed much of the historic Rose Garden, replacing it with a stone patio that critics say resembles the outdoor entertaining space at Mar-a-Lago.
He also pushed ahead with demolishing the East Wing to make room for a massive ballroom.
But it’s the latest Oval Office video that has people talking.
The clip quickly spread across social media, where critics blasted the redesign as “trashy,” “vulgar,” and “something you’d expect to see in a dictator’s palace, not the White House.”
Others joked that the room now looks less like the Oval Office and more like Trump’s personal penthouse.
