Dick Cheney died surrounded by family on Monday night — and before his body was even cold, MAGA trolls were already celebrating.
The former vice president’s death was announced Tuesday morning in a family statement. “His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,” it read.
For most of the country, Cheney’s death marked the end of a long and controversial political era. But in MAGA circles, it was a reason to throw a party — and to pile on his daughter, former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney, one of Trumpworld’s most despised enemies.
Liz Cheney became persona non grata in the GOP after breaking ranks with Donald Trump, especially after the 2020 election. She called him out directly, even appearing in an ad with her father that accused Trump of being a “coward.” In that same ad, Dick Cheney didn’t hold back, saying, “In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump.”
The ad didn’t save Liz from Trump’s wrath or from losing her Wyoming primary. And now, after her father’s death, MAGA supporters are gleefully reminding her that they haven’t forgotten.
Within minutes of the news breaking, right-wing users flooded social media with cruel, mocking posts. One wrote, “Dick Cheney passed away. While a smart tactician, he spawned Liz Cheney and for that we know who will wait for him,” attaching a GIF of Satan in a sexual pose.
A self-described Navy veteran and “devout Christian” chimed in, tagging Liz Cheney directly: “In a good news on Election Day story. Darth Cheney is done. Hell has a new resident, right Liz Cheney.”
“Couldn’t take Liz with him I guess,” sneered another.
Others ditched the pretense of subtlety altogether. One user under the handle ‘F–k Leftists’ posted, “Would like to offer condolences to Liz Cheney…….Actually no, f–k that horrid c–t.”
Another wrote bluntly, “Your evil dad is now in Hell.” Someone else added: “Spawn of Liz Cheney has died!”
It’s a grim reflection of just how far the Republican civil war has gone — that a onetime conservative icon’s death is now a punchline for the movement he helped create.
For decades, Dick Cheney was one of the most powerful figures in Republican politics, shaping U.S. foreign policy and steering the Bush administration through 9/11 and the Iraq War. But in the MAGA era, none of that mattered. He and his daughter committed the cardinal sin of turning on Trump — and in today’s GOP, that’s apparently unforgivable.
Even in death, Cheney’s name has become another battlefield in the fight for the soul of the Republican Party. And if the reaction to his passing is any indication, that fight is only getting uglier.
