Donald Trump’s support is crumbling — and now it’s coming from inside his own base.
A new Pew Research Center poll shows that only 38% of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance, down from 41% just two months ago. That marks a new low for the former president — and a sharp warning sign as his re-election campaign ramps up.
Most alarming for Trump: his own voters are walking away. In February, 95% of people who voted for Trump said they approved of the job he was doing. That number has now dropped to 85% — a 10-point collapse in just a few months.
He’s also lost 13 points among nonvoters, showing his appeal is narrowing across the board.
The biggest drag appears to be economic. 61% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s tariff policies as prices on everyday goods continue to rise.
His recently signed “Big Beautiful Bill” — which extended his first-term tax cuts and slashed Medicaid — isn’t helping either. 46% disapprove of the bill, only 32% approve, and 23% are unsure.
The damage doesn’t stop there. The Trump administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files is another sore spot. Seven in 10 Americans believe the case was mishandled. Even among Republicans, 53% disapprove, while 44% approve. 63% of all respondents say they don’t trust what the federal government is saying about Epstein.
Voters still give Trump some credit on a few issues. 47% say they’re “somewhat confident” in his ability to negotiate trade deals, and 46% express confidence in how he handles immigration. But those numbers aren’t enough to offset the broader dissatisfaction.
When asked whether Trump is making the federal government better or worse, the response is lopsided: 53% say worse, only 27% say better.
Even Republicans are losing faith. Right after Trump took office, 76% of Republicans believed he would improve the government. Today, just 55% still feel that way. And 16% now say he’s made things worse.
Democrats, who already disapproved in high numbers, are even more firm in their opposition. 87% now say Trump is making the government worse, up from 78% after his inauguration.
The bottom line: Trump isn’t just facing resistance from Democrats or independents. He’s bleeding support from his own side, and voters are turning away as his approval rating hits a new low.
