Donald Trump managed to make himself part of another big international event Sunday, and social media noticed.
After Spain defeated England to win the FIFA World Cup, Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino onstage to present the championship trophy. But instead of stepping aside after the handoff, the president lingered next to the celebrating players as confetti rained down and cameras captured the historic moment.
Infantino appeared to gesture for Trump to move out of the way, but Trump stayed put for several moments, clapping and standing alongside the Spanish squad before finally leaving the stage.
That awkward scene prompted one Australian broadcaster to deliver a line that has since exploded online.
“They’re going to edit him out of that,” Special Broadcasting Service commentator Claudio Fabiano was caught saying on a hot mic.
Those eight words quickly took off on social media, with the clip racking up more than 1.2 million views on X as users mocked Trump’s apparent attempt to insert himself into Spain’s championship celebration.

The moment added fuel to criticism that Trump had been trying to make the tournament about himself long before the final whistle. Throughout the competition, critics accused the president of seeking the spotlight at an event that was supposed to belong to the athletes.
The reaction only intensified after Spain’s players lifted the trophy while Trump remained onstage, occupying space that is traditionally reserved for the winning team’s celebration and the iconic championship photographs.
Spain’s national team later appeared to send a subtle reminder about who the day was really for.
The team’s official X account shared a photo from the trophy presentation with the caption, “🙌🏼🏆 LOS SUEÑOS SE CUMPLEN” (or **”Dreams do come true”), without Trump.
