Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville is sounding a dire warning: President Donald Trump may go as far as “cancelling the election” to keep Democrats from taking control of Congress.

In a recent interview with Jim Acosta on The Jim Acosta Show, Carville said he “wouldn’t put anything past” Trump—and he laid out the bluntest possibility yet.

Acosta pressed Carville:

“Do you worry [about] Donald Trump and Stephen Miller and some of these types monkeying around with the mid‑terms and the way we do elections in this country?”
He added further concern:

“With what they’re trying to pull these days, they don’t want accountability. They don’t want Democrats getting the gavels in the House and the Senate… I mean, you worry about that James?”
Carville didn’t mince words:

“In a short word, yes! In the longer words, very.”

He warned that Trump isn’t just preparing—he’s already front-loading efforts: early endorsements, moneyraising, and organizing to protect a MAGA‑aligned Congress

This extreme scenario isn’t just speculation. Carville specifically said he expects Trump to “try to call the election off, to do anything he can,” stressing that Trump’s strategic imagination surpasses what most people consider.

He pointed to rising public anxiety:

“You know people come up to me all the time and say, ‘James. I’m really scared!’”
He didn’t offer reassurance:

“You should be, you have every reason to be scared. Don’t kid yourself.”

Carville and Acosta agreed on the shock of it all:

Acosta: “This is scary s—!”

Carville: “Yeah, it’s really scary. Really scary.”

They also revisited January 6—the violent attempt to overturn the 2020 election—and Trump’s subsequent pardons of more than 1,500 participants, warning it could happen again. When asked if Trump might escalate further, Carville was clear:

“This will even be more, because he’s seeing this coming… he’s going to try to think of something to extricate himself from it.”
