Six people were killed after a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River near Manhattan on Thursday afternoon, according to multiple reports. The crash happened around 3 p.m. on the New Jersey side of the river. Fire officials said emergency crews rushed to the scene right after the helicopter went down.

Two sources involved in the rescue told The New York Times that five people—three children and two adults—were pulled from the water, but their conditions were not clear at the time.

Videos shared online showed the helicopter, a Bell 206, flipped upside down and mostly underwater. Police boats and helicopters were seen nearby as the rescue was underway.

The crash happened near a pier close to the Manhattan side, near one of the Holland Tunnel’s ventilation towers. Firefighters and rescue teams were seen working in the area.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will look into what caused the crash.

Helicopters are a common sight in the skies above Manhattan, used for everything from business travel to sightseeing tours. There have been several crashes over the years, including a 2009 accident involving a plane and a tourist helicopter that killed nine people, and a 2018 crash into the East River that left five people dead.
