Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, shared that the leaked Signal chat shows that Vice President J.D. Vance believes Donald Trump is so out of touch with reality that “he doesn’t even understand what he’s doing.” This assessment came to light during a conversation on NBC, shedding light on the deeper flaws in Trump’s decision-making.

Goldberg explained this on NBC Sunday, telling host Kristen Welker that he learned about Vance’s view when he was mistakenly added to a Signal chat discussing a U.S. attack on Yemen. In the chat, Vance expressed concerns about Trump’s handling of the situation, writing, “I am not sure the president is aware how inconsistent this is with his message on Europe right now.”

Goldberg said that Vance’s message was more than just a critique of the decision itself.

“I not only read it as a disagreement with Trump post-decision,” Goldberg recalled. “I read it as very fraught because what J.D. Vance is saying in the group chat, which included, as you know, much of the cabinet, much of the president’s cabinet, he’s saying the president doesn’t even understand what he’s doing here.”

Goldberg pointed out that the conversation was serious and significant. He emphasized that Vance, in a chat with members of the president’s cabinet, was essentially stating that Trump didn’t understand the implications of his actions.

“Here we have a serious, substantive conversation where he’s telling members of the cabinet, members of the president’s own cabinet, that no, no, no, he doesn’t even get it,” Goldberg added.
