Former President Trump took to the virtual podium to complain that the lack of presidential immunity would make it hard for him to live the “golden years” of retirement. In a social media blitz, Trump painted a vivid picture of retired presidents besieged by legal battles, trading in leisurely for courtroom drama.
“WITHOUT IMMUNITY, IT WOULD BE VERY HARD FOR A PRESIDENT TO ENJOY HIS OR HER ‘GOLDEN YEARS’ OF RETIREMENT,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“THEY WOULD BE UNDER SIEGE BY RADICAL, OUT OF CONTROL PROSECUTORS, MUCH LIKE I AM, BUT WITHOUT THE RETIREMENT!!!” he added.
With a rhetorical flourish, Trump warned that if presidential immunity were to crumble, it would be an open season on former commanders-in-chief. He then issued a threat to President Biden.
“IF A PRESIDENT DOES NOT HAVE IMMUNITY, THE COURT WILL BE ‘OPENING THE FLOODGATES’ TO PROSECUTING FORMER PRESIDENTS. AN OPPOSING HOSTILE PARTY WILL BE DOING IT FOR ANY REASON, ALL OF THE TIME!” Trump ranted.
“IF THEY TAKE AWAY MY IMMUNITY, THEY TAKE AWAY CROOKED JOE BIDEN’S IMMUNITY. WITHOUT IMMUNITY, IT WOULD BE VERY HARD FOR A PRESIDENT TO PROPERLY FUNCTION!”
As the curtain fell on the legal drama of the day, Trump’s legal team attempted to juggle and toss aside charges of election interference, claiming that the only valid criminal prosecution route was a Senate trial. Four criminal indictments, a couple of election interference accusations, and a sprinkle of Capitol drama later – welcome to the post-presidential circus.
