Russell Brand’s legal troubles have taken a dramatic turn. The British comedian-turned-MAGA podcaster was found guilty Thursday of rape and sexual assault charges involving four women, and a judge has warned that he could face a “significant” prison sentence. Brand, who had been free on bail, was taken into custody following the verdict.

The jury at London’s Southwark Crown Court convicted Brand, 51, of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving allegations dating back more than 20 years. He was acquitted of two additional rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. After deliberating for more than eight hours over two days, the jury reached its decision Thursday, The Hill reports.

The prosecution had portrayed Brand as a ruthless and calculating sexual predator who used his celebrity status and influence to exploit women. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of London’s Metropolitan Police said the verdict reflected the courage of the women who came forward. He said Brand had used his fame and influence to commit sexual offenses, adding that his growing public profile had been accompanied by an increasing sense of entitlement.

Brand denied the allegations and maintained that he had never forced anyone to do anything against their will. During his testimony, he acknowledged that he had been obsessed with sex as a young man and had lived a promiscuous lifestyle, but insisted that his past behavior did not make him guilty of the crimes charged.

His defense team challenged the credibility of the allegations, arguing that the women had waited years to report the alleged assaults and only came forward after a 2023 documentary aired featuring anonymous accusations against him. Brand also told the court that the criminal case had devastated his life and family, saying his existence had been consumed by the allegations.

Brand’s rise to fame began in the early 2000s, when his provocative stand-up comedy, television appearances, and BBC radio show made him a household name in Britain. He later appeared in Hollywood films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. His high-profile marriage to pop star Katy Perry also kept him in the public spotlight.

In recent years, however, Brand moved away from mainstream entertainment and relocated to Florida, building a large online following through videos focused on wellness, conspiracy theories, and his religious beliefs. His wife, Laura, accompanied him to court and testified as a character witness in his defense. Brand said friends and former colleagues had largely abandoned him.

But the jury ultimately found him guilty on four counts. With sentencing scheduled for Monday, Judge Joel Bennathan has already indicated that Brand should prepare for a substantial prison term. The man who once built a career on outrageous performances and celebrity notoriety is now facing a very different kind of public reckoning.
