In one of the most stunning moments of Thursday’s hearing of the House Select Committee, the panel revealed that members of the extremist group “Proud Boys” came within 40 feet of then-vice president Mike Pence as secret service agents rushed him to the Senate basement as a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6.
Security footage of the day shows rioters came dangerously close to the vice president, who was being evacuated as a crowd of Donald Trump supporters inside and outside of the Capitol chanted, “hang Mike Pence”.
Rep. Pete Aguilar, a committee member, said a confidential witness has testified to the FBI that members of the Proud Boys, who were present in the riot, “would have killed Mike Pence if given the chance”.
The revelation stressed how close Capitol attackers came to finding and harming top officials in the U.S. government during the insurrection.
