Dikembe Mutombo, the renowned NBA center and Hall of Famer, has died at the age of 58 following a courageous battle with brain cancer, the league confirmed on Monday.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a heartfelt statement honoring Mutombo’s legacy. “Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life,” he said. “On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others.”
Silver praised Mutombo as “a humanitarian at his core,” highlighting his dedication to improving communities in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo and across Africa. “I had the privilege of traveling the world with Dikembe and witnessing firsthand how his generosity uplifted countless lives,” he added.
Known for his infectious smile and signature finger wag, Mutombo captivated fans across generations. “His indomitable spirit continues on in those he helped and inspired throughout his extraordinary life,” Silver reflected. “I will miss him dearly.”
Mutombo is survived by his wife, Rose, and their seven children, four of whom they adopted. His impact on the game and his philanthropic work will be remembered by many.
