Canadians are pushing back against Donald Trump’s idea of making Canada the 51st U.S. state, and they’ve enlisted Mike Myers to help get the message out.
The “Austin Powers” star, a well-known Canadian, teamed up with Prime Minister Mark Carney to support his “elbows up” campaign ahead of the country’s snap election. The phrase “elbows up” is a hockey term that signals resistance, something the campaign is all about.
The Liberal Party, led by Carney, has focused its message on opposing Trump, especially after the U.S. president launched a trade war against Canada in January, damaging the relationship between the two countries.
In a new ad, Carney interviews Myers at an ice rink. Myers, who now lives in the U.S., answers questions about classic Canadian topics like the kids’ show Mr. Dressup, hockey, and the weather in Toronto (“winter and construction,” they joke). After acing all the questions, Myers asks, “Will there always be a Canada?” Carney reassures him, and then Myers turns around to reveal a “Never 51” jersey, mocking Trump’s idea of making Canada part of the U.S.
