In a stunning turn of events during runoff elections, the left-wing coalition known as the New Popular Front (NFP) is projected to outpace Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party, according to IPSOS estimates.
The NFP, a coalition of five left-wing parties, is poised to secure between 172 to 192 seats in the parliament, a significant step towards the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority.
President Emmanuel Macron’s Ensemble party is also making waves with a projected 150 to 170 seats, exceeding pre-election predictions.
Meanwhile, Le Pen’s RN is expected to closely follow with 132 to 152 seats, marking a notable increase from their 89 seats in the previous elections.
In Paris, the news sparked jubilation among NFP supporters, who gathered in the streets to celebrate their unexpected lead over the RN.
The outcome marks a dramatic reversal after RN initially led in the first round of voting.
In stark contrast, tensions ran high at a right-wing campaign event in Bois de Vincennes, Paris, as early projections indicated a challenging night for the RN. Supporters, clutching tricolor flags, watched in silence as hope for victory dwindled.
As the night unfolded, flares were lit and chants of “everyone hates fascists” echoed through the streets of Paris.
