In an unexpected moment during a live press conference, Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, was abruptly interrupted by a phone call, with a mysterious voice on the other end instructing her not to comment on the recent missile strike in Dnipro, Ukraine.
The incident unfolded as Zakharova was answering questions from journalists during a regular briefing. The phone call, which was not part of the official agenda, was heard over the speakerphone, and a male voice was clearly audible, telling Zakharova to “not comment on the ballistic missile strikes on Yuzhmash.”
This unusual interruption comes as tensions rise following a new escalation in the ongoing war. On Thursday, Ukraine confirmed a missile attack on the city of Dnipro, with reports indicating that Russia had fired a missile, possibly an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), at a key industrial site, Yuzhmash.
Ukrainian authorities are still investigating the exact nature of the missile, with Ukraine’s foreign ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi stating that experts are working to determine the missile’s type.
Tykhyi condemned the strike, asserting that it shows Russia’s unwillingness to seek peace and its ongoing efforts to escalate the conflict. “Russia does not seek peace; it seeks to expand the war,” Tykhyi said.
The phone call’s timing and content, and the subsequent refusal to discuss the attack, left many observers questioning the level of control over Russia’s messaging during such a high-profile moment.
