During a political rally in Conroe, Texas, Saturday, former President Donald Trump railed against the U.S. Justice Department, calling the prosecution of his supporters who stormed the US Capitol “a disgrace” and promising that he would pardon the insurrectionists if he’s elected to office in 2024.
“If I run, and if I win, we will treat those people from Jan. 6 fairly,” Trump told the crowd. “And if it requires pardons, we will give them pardons,” he continued. “Because they are being treated so unfairly,” he added, according to CNN.
“It’s a disgrace. It’s a disgrace,” Trump said of the prosecutions and prison sentences rioters have faced.
Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election, which Trump has falsely claimed was rigged.
The former president’s comments reflect the growing sentiment among Republicans that the Capitol rioters should be forgiven and the events of that day erased from history.
So far, more than 725 people had been arrested in connection with the attack, with 165 people pleading guilty to various federal charges and at least 70 receiving sentences or having their cases adjudicated.
