Republican Rep. Glenn Thompson, of Pennsylvania, has come under fire on social media for attending his gay son’s wedding three days after he voted against legislation to protect same-sex marriage.
The lawmaker and his wife were “thrilled to attend and celebrate their son’s marriage on Friday night as he began this new chapter in his life,” his press secretary Maddison Stone told NBC News. Thompson’s son told the network that he “married the love of [his] life” on Friday and that his “father was there.”
The wedding came after Thompson on Tuesday joined the majority of House Republicans in voting against the Respect for Marriage Act, which would enshrine marriage equality in federal law.
However, 47 Republicans did join all of the Democrats to pass the landmark legislation.
The vote came amid concern that people’s rights could be at risk in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent reversal of Roe v. Wade.
Thompson’s blatant display of hypocrisy sparked a backlash on social media. Check some of the reactions below:

Here in Pennsylvania we have a GOP Congressman named Glenn Thompson who attended his son’s gay wedding THREE DAYS after voting against gay marriage
I would have disinvited his bigoted ass
Without hypocrisy, these Republicans would have no “values” at all

Glenn Thompson, (@CongressmanGT), attended gay son’s wedding after opposing protections for same-sex marriage.
What a disgusting waste of space. And, can you imagine the shame of his son?https://t.co/UPoPvKLvbX

Glenn Thompson's son is a better man than I am, because if my father had voted against the Respect for Marriage Act three days before my wedding he would've been disinvited https://t.co/U5bC5CmJ5O

Glenn Thompson. Republican. Pennsylvania. Attends gay son's wedding. Spokesperson says Thompson was 'thrilled'. Yet 3 days earlier he voted against federal protection for same-sex marriage. Can't make it up.
