On Monday, Fox News analyst Jonathan Turley said President Donald Trump pushing the idea of a third term is not fair to potential Republican successors like Vice President J.D. Vance.
“There’s also a cost to this that may not be fair to people like Vance or others who are going to run,” Turley told Fox host Laura Ingraham. “All of this talk tends to diminish them.”
He added: “Part of Trump’s legacy will be securing the White House for a Republican after he leaves office.”
“And this type of talk reduces figures like Vance to sort of Mini-Mes and that’s not a good thing for them,” he continued. “It’s not fair to people like Vance. So, this does appear … something of a jump scare. With the exception of amending the Constitution, it does not seem particularly credible.”
Trump on Sunday told NBC News he’s serious about running for a third term, mentioning that there are “methods” he could use to stay in power beyond his second term, despite the constitutional limits of doing so. This is the second time in less than three weeks he’s raised the idea.
Some analysts and lawmakers have suggested that Trump is promoting this idea to divert attention from other controversies sparked by his administration in the first three months of his time in office.
The speculation follows a proposal made in January by Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), who suggested an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow Trump to serve a third term. Ogles argued that this change would enable the country to “sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.”
Trump’s recent comments mark the most significant he has made regarding the possibility of a third term.
