The European Union announced Wednesday that it has imposed new sanctions against Belarus for its supporting role in Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine, effectively banning about 70 percent of all imports from that country, Reuters reported via Global News.
“Among the sectors hit are wood, timber, steel and iron, which were not covered by previous sanctions, and cumulatively represent nearly 40 percent of all Belarusian exports to the EU. Other sectors affected by the EU import ban are cement, rubber, and fuels,” according to Reuters.
The measures also include fresh economic sanctions against 22 high-ranking members of the Belarusian military involved in the aggression against Ukraine.
The move comes after Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko allowed Russian troops to move into Ukraine from its territory and changed his country’s constitution to allow permanent deployment of Russian forces and nuclear weapons on its territory.
The events of the past days demonstrate that Belarus is becoming his puppet and president Lukashenko is increasingly losing decision-making power to the Kremlin.
