Utah Senator Mitt Romney (R) didn’t mince words when he condemned fellow Republicans for their recent appearances at former President Trump’s trial in New York, where allegations of hush money payments to a porn star loom large.

“I think it’s a little demeaning to show up in front of a courthouse and — particularly one where we’re talking about an allegation of paying a porn star,” Romney asserted in a Politico video clip.

“There is a level of dignity and decorum that you expect of people who are running for the highest station in the land, and going out and prostrating themselves in front of the public to try and apparently curry favor with the person who’s our nominee, it’s a little embarrassing,” he added.

Romney’s scathing rebuke echoes similar sentiments expressed by Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), who also disapproved of their party members’ presence at Trump’s trial. Romney went further, labeling the spectacle “very difficult to watch,” emphasizing the stark departure from the dignity and decorum expected from those vying for the highest office in the nation.

The roster of Republicans attending Trump’s trial reads like a who’s who of the party’s establishment, with figures like House Speaker Mike Johnson (La.), former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and Senators JD Vance (Ohio), Tommy Tuberville (Ala.), and Rick Scott (Fla.) all making appearances, along with Representative Byron Donalds (Fla.).

Yet, amidst these political theatrics, Johnson attempted to deflect criticism, dismissing the trial as a sham intended to sideline Trump from the campaign trail. Such excuses only highlight the party’s willingness to abandon principle in favor of power.

Trump’s trial, the first criminal trial of a U.S. president, revolves around allegations of falsifying business records related to hush money payments made by his former attorney, Michael Cohen, to adult film actor Stormy Daniels. The sordid affair underscores the depths to which some Republicans are willing to sink in their allegiance to Trump, forsaking integrity for political expediency.
