Podcast host Joe Rogan is sounding the alarm over a potential scenario he says would push Americans to the brink: using war as an excuse to cling to power.
Rogan suggested that Americans would revolt if President Donald Trump attempted to use the war in Iran as an excuse to serve an illegal third term as president.
During a conversation with Australian comedian James Donald Forbes McCann, Rogan pointed to global examples of how wartime can complicate democratic processes—but made clear he believes Americans wouldn’t tolerate it.
The discussion touched on Benjamin Netanyahu, who has faced legal problems in Israel even amid ongoing conflict. Rogan noted that some Israelis have pushed to hold their leader accountable despite wartime pressures.
He also referenced Ukraine, where elections have been delayed due to the ongoing war following Russia’s invasion—raising broader questions about how democracies function during crises.
But when it came to the United States, Rogan didn’t hesitate.
“If Donald Trump said he had to stay president because we’re at war, people would go crazy,” Rogan said. “They would light New York City on fire. There’s no chance. That’s nuts.”
The blunt reaction underscores a deeper point: while some countries have paused elections or faced political upheaval during wartime, Rogan argued that Americans would draw a hard line if a president tried to use conflict—such as tensions with Iran—to justify extending power beyond constitutional limits.
As McCann summed it up, the response ultimately comes down to what a country is willing to tolerate.
