In a fiery moment at a Univision town hall, a Hispanic voter did what many journalists have failed to do: hold Donald Trump accountable for his troubling record in office, especially regarding the January 6 Capitol riots.

The 56-year-old construction worker from Florida, who identified himself as a former Republican, didn’t mince words.

“I want to give you the opportunity to try to win back my vote,” he began, making it clear that Trump’s actions—or lack thereof—have left him disillusioned. “I am a Republican, no longer registered,” he said. “I want to give you the opportunity to try to win back my vote, okay? Your action and maybe inaction during your presidency and the last few years sort of was, you know, a little disturbing to me.”

He pointedly criticized Trump’s inaction during the Capitol attack, saying, “What happened during January 6 and the fact that you waited so long to take action while your supporters were attacking the Capitol.” The voter continued, addressing Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. “I felt the public was misled, and many lives could have been saved with better information. And what about those in your own administration who don’t support you? If they don’t back you, why should I?”

He added, “Your own vice president doesn’t want to support you now.”

Trump attempted to deflect, claiming that only a “small portion” of his former team had turned against him. “The vice president? I disagree with him,” Trump said, shifting blame and insisting that his rally attendees were motivated by the belief that the election was rigged. He downplayed the violence at the Capitol, framing it as a “day of love” for his supporters.

The voter’s confrontation exposed Trump’s evasiveness and raised critical questions about his presidency—questions that many in the media have sidestepped.
