The incident unfolded during a heated session of the House Oversight Committee, where tensions escalated over a resolution targeting Attorney General Merrick Garland. Greene's comment about Crockett's appearance, specifically mentioning "fake eyelashes," sparked outrage. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez swiftly condemned Greene's remarks as "disgusting" and a breach of decorum, leading to a terse exchange between the two. In a memorable retort, Crockett challenged Chairman James Comer about the boundaries of personal attacks after Greene made comments saying: “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blonde, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?” Greene later defended herself, emphasizing her physical fitness. “Yes my body is built and strong NOT with nips, tucks, plastic, or silicone, but through a healthy lifestyle,” Greene said. Crockett told The Independent that the situation nearly escalated further, with Pressley preparing to intervene physically. “When AOC jumped in so quickly, what people didn't see off camera was that Ayanna Pressley was ready to jump in and stood up and... it was gonna get into a fight,” She also acknowledged the support of Jamie Raskin, who rebuked Greene for her remarks during the committee session. Reflecting on the broader implications, Crockett highlighted the challenges women of color encounter in such environments. "When you're alone, people feel emboldened to take liberties," she remarked, underscoring the impact of solidarity among women of color in Congress. Ocasio-Cortez commended Crockett's contributions, praising her legal acumen and ability to communicate effectively with the public. Crockett expressed gratitude for the support from her colleagues and emphasized the need for greater awareness of workplace dynamics affecting women of color.
