Michigan Congressman Shri Thanedar has filed articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, accusing him of abusing power and breaking the Constitution.

“I have introduced articles of impeachment against President Trump,” Thanedar said Monday. “When Trump ignores the Constitution, Congress, and the courts, he is not ‘fighting for America.’ He is tearing it down and endangering our democracy.”

Thanedar filed seven articles of impeachment. He says Trump overstepped his power by doing things like cutting government spending without Congress, deporting a man against a Supreme Court ruling, and pushing policies that hurt the economy and violate free speech.

One key example is the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly sent to El Salvador, despite a 9-0 ruling from the Supreme Court saying he should not be removed.

“Donald Trump has already done real damage to our democracy, but defying a unanimous 9-0 Supreme Court ruling, that has to be the one final straw,” Thanedar said. “It’s time we impeach Donald J. Trump.”

Other charges include Trump’s use of tariffs that shook global markets, silencing reporters, misuse of personal data, and what Thanedar calls “bribery and corruption in the justice system.”

“Article seven, tyrannical overreach,” Thanedar said. “Finally, and most importantly, he is attempting to consolidate unchecked power and erode the constitutional limits of the presidency.”

“In this country, we have presidents, not kings. That’s not just misconduct. It’s impeachable misconduct,” he said.

Although Thanedar’s move is bold, it’s unlikely to move forward in a Republican-controlled House. Impeachment requires a majority vote in the House and a two-thirds vote in the Senate, where Republicans also hold power.

Still, Thanedar’s message is clear. He’s warning that Trump’s actions threaten the very foundation of American democracy.

The push comes as the Trump Organization begins selling “Trump 2028” hats, fueling fears that Trump may try to run for a third term—something banned by the Constitution.

“If we let this stand, we are saying the president is above the law. That the United States Constitution is optional,” Thanedar said. “I won’t be silent and I’m calling on all my colleagues, Democrats, Republicans and independents, to stand up with me.”

“Enough is enough. Donald J. Trump must be impeached,” he said.
