Donald Trump took another bizarre detour into his long-running fixation on Kamala Harris’ appearance Saturday, mocking the former vice president’s looks at a Tennessee rally while women standing behind him laughed along.
The president appeared to wander off script during the midterm campaign event for Tennessee Republicans, recalling campaign rallies held by Harris and former President Joe Biden during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Remember that beautiful Kamala? Somebody said she’s so beautiful. Really?” Trump cracked.
Several women behind him burst into laughter. One gave Harris a thumbs-down, while another emphatically shook her head.
It was hardly the first time Trump has brought up Harris’ appearance. During the 2024 presidential campaign, he repeatedly called her beautiful before insisting that he was better-looking than the woman he was trying to defeat.
Trump has a well-documented habit of turning political appearances into personal attacks. But his recurring commentary about Harris’ looks has been particularly strange, given that he has alternated between complimenting her appearance and ridiculing it.
During a livestreamed conversation with Elon Musk in August 2024, Trump discussed a *Time* magazine cover featuring an illustration of Harris and began scrutinizing her appearance.
“She looks like the most beautiful actress ever to live,” Trump told Musk. He then compared her to his wife, first lady Melania Trump, before adding, “But of course, she’s a beautiful woman, so we’ll leave it at that, right?”
Trump returned to the subject less than a week later during a rally in Pennsylvania, where he complained about the political risks of complimenting a female opponent.
“Don’t ever call a woman beautiful, because that’ll be the end of your political career,” he told the crowd.
Then came the punchline he apparently couldn’t resist.
“But I say that I am much better looking. I’m a better-looking person than Kamala.”
