After years of fighting, Donald Trump has finally paid the price for one of the court cases he spent years trying to overturn.
The president has officially transferred more than $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll after a jury found him liable for sexually assaulting her and defaming her.
According to a court filing submitted Tuesday, Trump paid Carroll $5,625,005.48 on July 9, ending a years-long legal battle over the damages awarded in the case.
“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll,” Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan said in a statement. “Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict.”
The money had been sitting in a court-controlled account since the 2023 verdict while Trump continued fighting the judgment through the appeals process.
But earlier this month, a federal judge ordered Trump to finally hand over the payment after he exhausted his legal options. Even the Supreme Court—where Trump has enjoyed several major victories—declined to intervene.
Carroll celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision, calling it “A WIN IS FOR EVERY WOMAN IN THE WORLD!”
The case began after Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the 1990s. She detailed the allegation in her 2019 memoir, What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal.
Trump has repeatedly denied the accusation, claiming Carroll fabricated the story and saying he did not know her. He also attacked her publicly, including in posts on Truth Social, which led to the defamation claims that became central to the lawsuit.
Trump did not testify during the 2023 trial, and his legal team did not call any witnesses.
A New York jury ultimately found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. They awarded Carroll $5 million in damages.
Trump’s continued attacks against Carroll led to a second defamation trial in 2024, where another jury awarded her an additional $83.3 million for statements he made while denying her allegations and calling her a liar.
However, after years of delays, appeals, and attempts to avoid the payment, Trump has finally handed over the money a jury ordered him to pay.
