Instead of tackling ongoing criticism over his immigration policies, Donald Trump has thrown his support behind a rebranding idea that seems aimed more at trolling the media than addressing policy.
The president took to Truth Social on Sunday to enthusiastically endorse a suggestion from a social media user to rename Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to “NICE”—short for National Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The idea wasn’t born out of policy debate, but out of a viral post joking that the change would force news outlets to say “NICE agents” on air “all day every day.”
Trump’s reaction was immediate and enthusiastic.
“GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT,” he wrote on Truth Social.
That was it—no policy explanation, no clarification, just a full-throated endorsement of a rebrand seemingly designed to needle journalists and critics.
The comment comes as Trump continues to face scrutiny over the substance and impact of his immigration agenda. But rather than engaging those critiques directly, the focus—at least for the moment—has shifted to a rebrand that critics say prioritizes optics and trolling over policy.
Whether the suggestion goes anywhere beyond social media remains unclear. For now, it’s another example of Trump leaning into messaging battles—this time, by trying to turn one of the most controversial federal agencies into a linguistic punchline.
