Trump Openly Floats Third Term, Defying the 22nd Amendment: ‘Would Love to Do It!’

President Donald Trump is once again stirring controversy over the idea of serving beyond the two-term limit — this time saying outright that he “would love to do it.”

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Japan Monday morning, Trump brushed off the notion that his presidency could be capped by the Constitution. “I haven’t really thought about it. We have some very good people as you know…but I have the best poll numbers that I’ve ever had,” he said.

Trump went on to praise Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential 2028 contenders — but his own comments made it clear he hasn’t ruled himself out. “We have one of them standing right here,” he said, gesturing to Rubio, who was on the flight. “We have JD obviously, the vice president who’s great. Marco’s great. I’m not sure if anyone would run against those two. I think if they ever formed a group it would be unstoppable.”

When pressed on whether he was ruling out another run, Trump fired back, “You’ll have to tell me.”

“All I can tell you is that we have a great group of people, which they don’t,” he added, taking a dig at Democrats.

Trump then went a step further, making his most direct remark yet about a possible third run for the presidency. “I would love to do it – I have the best numbers ever!” he told reporters, according to Politico. “Am I not ruling it out? You’ll have to tell me.”

Those words — “would love to do it” — come despite the clear language of the 22nd Amendment, which limits any individual from being elected president more than twice. Still, Trump’s allies are reportedly exploring creative ways to keep him in power.

Last week, his former chief of staff Steve Bannon confidently predicted that Trump “is going to be president in 2028,” calling him an “instrument of divine will.” Bannon suggested there was already a “plan” in motion to get around the Constitution, saying there were “many different alternatives” that Trump’s team would unveil “at the appropriate time.”

One theory floated by Trump loyalists envisions a scenario where Trump could run as Vice President JD Vance’s running mate — and then step into the top job if Vance resigned. Legal experts, however, have slammed the idea as “nonsense,” arguing that the intent of the 22nd Amendment was to stop anyone from serving more than two terms, regardless of how they got there.

This isn’t the first time Trump has toyed with the idea of extending his presidency. Back in 2020, he said he was “probably entitled to another four years” in office. Earlier this year, at a rally in Las Vegas, he brought it up again.

Now, with Trump openly saying he “would love to do it,” the conversation around term limits has shifted from theoretical to tangible.
