California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking a swing at Donald Trump’s controversial crypto dealings—this time with satire. Speaking at a Politico summit in Sacramento, Newsom revealed he’s planning to launch a mock cryptocurrency aimed squarely at Trump’s digital scheme: the “Trump Corruption Coin.”
“We talked about his crypto grift,” Newsom said, recounting a private meeting with Trump earlier this year. “He was surprised that the meme coin is not even a coin.”
Trump’s meme token, “$TRUMP,” launched in January and quickly exploded in value, peaking at over $27 billion. But while Trump and his allies—who control 80% of the coin’s supply—raked in hundreds of millions, more than 800,000 investors reportedly lost a combined $2 billion. Critics have described it as a textbook “pump and dump” scheme.
In May, Trump hosted a private dinner at his Virginia golf club, attended by top $TRUMP coin holders looking to curry favor and push policy agendas.
Newsom, never one to miss a jab, now plans to hit back with satire. As part of his new “Patriot Shop”—an online storefront mocking Trump’s merch-heavy branding—he hinted at a parody coin rollout.
“By the way, I’m about to come out with a coin on my patriot site, so you may want to look into that,” Newsom said. “We’re probably adding that, I think we’ll add a coin, maybe a Trump corruption coin or something.”
While Newsom made it clear the coin would be more of a novelty than a functioning cryptocurrency, the message is clear: Trump’s digital grift won’t go unanswered.
