In an effort to shield Americans from financial exploitation, nearly 200 Democratic lawmakers are calling for the removal of Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) led the charge with a fiery letter addressed to Russ Vought, director of the Office of Budget Management, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The lawmakers accuse Musk of using his influence to undermine the very agency designed to protect American consumers from financial harm.

“Your efforts to dismantle the CFPB are dangerous, and we will fight them at every turn,” the letter states. “We ask that you remove Mr. Musk’s operatives from the CFPB, restore all internal and external systems and operations, and allow the CFPB to continue to do its job of protecting American consumers.”

The letter, signed by 46 Democratic senators and 143 Democratic members of the House, slams Musk and President Trump for their attempts to weaken the CFPB—an agency that Warren helped create and that has been a frequent target of conservative attacks.

“This agency was built to regulate the financial institutions that have long tried to evade accountability, and now we’re seeing a clear attempt to hand it over to the very billionaires who’ve been pushing to dismantle it,” the Democrats write. “President Trump is putting his billionaire backers first, even if it means hurting ordinary Americans.”

The lawmakers also raised serious concerns about Musk’s role as a non-elected official reviewing sensitive government records, a move they argue is part of a larger effort to radically change financial regulations for the benefit of wealthy elites.

This latest effort by Musk and the Trump administration is the latest chapter in a long-running battle over the CFPB, an agency Democrats say is crucial for ensuring financial fairness for all Americans.
