Months after a string of explosive allegations engulfed Florida Republican Rep. Cory Mills, he is now facing something even more serious: a federal criminal investigation just ahead of the midterm elections.
According to MS NOW, citing multiple anonymous sources familiar with the matter, the Justice Department has opened a criminal probe into Mills over a wide range of allegations, including sexual misconduct, campaign finance issues, financial disclosure violations, accepting improper gifts, and other ethics concerns.
A third source told the network that the FBI has already interviewed at least one person about Mills’ finances and the allegations against him.
Mills claimed he was caught off guard by the report. “This is the first I’m hearing about it,” he told the outlet.
The congressman also insisted the Federal Election Commission had dismissed allegations involving his campaign spending and suggested any investigation was likely tied to the House Ethics Committee’s ongoing probe.
That ethics investigation has been hanging over Mills since last November. As recently as May, the committee was still gathering evidence into allegations that span both his personal conduct and financial dealings.
Among the most serious accusations are claims involving his former girlfriend, former Miss United States Lindsey Langston.
According to previous reports, Langston accused Mills of harassing her and threatening to release revenge porn after she ended their relationship upon discovering he had been having an affair.
Mills has also been accused of assaulting another woman he was reportedly dating. Although the woman filed a police report, Mills was never arrested.
According to multiple reports, then-interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Ed Martin declined to approve an arrest warrant requested by Metropolitan Police. Subsequent reporting also alleged that Mills attempted to avoid arrest by threatening to contact then-Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The controversies don’t stop there.
Earlier reporting also alleged Mills was found with sex workers in the country of Georgia in 2021 while traveling to Afghanistan, adding yet another scandal to a growing list of questions surrounding the congressman.
Despite the mounting allegations, Mills has refused calls to resign, and House Republicans have shown little appetite for forcing him out of Congress.
He’s still seeking reelection, leaving Florida voters to decide whether the growing legal and ethical cloud hanging over his campaign matters at the ballot box.
