Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) went on an explosive rant against transgender people during a House Oversight Committee hearing on Wednesday, shouting “TRANNY, TRANNY, TRANNY,” while Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) tried to restore order.
Connolly had just pointed out that Mace’s language could be offensive to the LGBTQ and transgender communities, calling the term she used a slur. He appealed to the committee chair, Rep. James Comer, to address the issue of decorum.
But Mace wasn’t having it. As Connolly spoke, Mace interrupted, shouting, “You want penises in women’s bathrooms,” before repeating her attack. “Tranny, tranny, tranny. I don’t really care,” she said, before continuing, “You want penises in women’s bathrooms, and I’m not going to have it. Okay? No, thank you.”
Connolly, visibly frustrated, continued to call for respect, saying, “A slur is a slur,” and asking Chairman Comer to step in. He emphasized that people should be able to discuss policies without disrespecting others.
In response, Mace dug in her heels, saying, “I’m not going to be canceled, counseled by a man over men and women’s spaces, or men who have mental health issues dressing as women. I’m not being counseled by somebody. Okay?”
The exchange became heated, with Comer banging the gavel and calling for order. “Decorum is at the discretion of the chair,” Comer said, before admitting that he wasn’t familiar with all the politically correct terms surrounding LGBTQ issues and promised to look into it.
The incident underscores the growing divide over transgender rights and the intense language often used in the debate.
