Ah, the familiar tune of political upheaval echoes once more as Greene hints at a potential move to oust Speaker Mike Johnson, suggesting that the MAGA radicals are eager to take over the GOP asylum.
During an appearance on Steve Bannon’s podcast, Greene criticized Johnson’s concessions to President Biden and the Democrats during government funding negotiations, hinting at her contemplation of initiating a motion to vacate the Speakership, reminiscent of the action that ousted Johnson’s predecessor, former Rep. Kevin McCarthy.
“We are making that decision on a minute-by-minute basis today, Steve, and I think you can stay tuned,” she remarked to Bannon.
When pressed on whether she would spearhead the effort to remove Johnson, Greene again hinted at the possibility of a motion to vacate.
“We are going to be making decisions on a minute-by-minute basis today, and I urge you to watch and see what happens,” she said.
Greene’s statements rippled through the GOP landscape just ahead of a pivotal House vote on a $1.2 trillion government funding package. Despite Johnson’s staunch endorsement and claims of conservative victories, House hardliners remain unsatisfied, accusing him of capitulating to Democratic demands.
Greene asserted to Bannon that the situation paints a grim picture for Republicans, suggesting that instead of Republicans controlling the Speaker, it’s the Democrats who hold the reins.
The likelihood of Greene’s threat materializing remains uncertain, as does the prospect of garnering enough support to unseat Johnson. Some Democrats have signaled willingness to support Johnson if he continues to broker bipartisan deals with Biden, particularly regarding government funding and Ukraine aid.
While Johnson has rejected a Senate-passed foreign aid package for Ukraine, he has pledged to collaborate on a House version upon Congress’s return from recess next month.
