Judge Aileen Cannon has announced the trial date for Donald Trump in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case.
After the Department of Justice requested the trial to commence in December, while the former president’s legal team sought a delay until after the election, Judge Cannon opted for a middle ground. The trial is now scheduled to begin on May 20, 2024.
The charges against the twice-impeached and twice-indicted former president involve 37 counts related to his possession of classified documents after departing from the White House. Instead of returning the documents to the National Archives, Trump defied a subpoena and illegally retained them, leading to the current legal proceedings.
His personal valet, Walt Nauta, has also been charged as a co-conspirator in this case.
