During an interview on CNN Monday night, conservative attorney George Conway said that Donald Trump’s longtime accounting firm Mazars USA’s decision to cut ties with the Trump Organization spells very bad news for the former President.
The accounting firm sent a letter to Trump Organization executive vice president and chief legal officer Alan Garten on Feb. 9 notifying him of the firm’s decision to drop the business as a client. It also said that the financial statements it prepared for Trump between 2011 and 2020 “should no longer be relied upon.” The letter was included in a court document filed Monday by New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office.
Those statements are at the center of two investigations into whether Trump illegally inflated the values of his assets to defraud lenders. The Mazars
According to Conway, having a decade’s worth of financial statements pulled by accountants is “just about the most calamitous thing” that could happen to any business with outside financing or investors. “This is worse for him than being impeached twice,” he said on CNN.
Asked to elaborate on his statement, Conway said:
“The worst thing to happen to an impeached president is that “they are removed from office and they go back to doing what they did.” In Trump’s case, however, “this is his private life. This is what he had to go back to, which is running his full private business. And now his private business has 10 years of financial statements have been pulled by the accountants and they said you cannot rely on them,” he explained before adding: ” All these financial statements are worthless.”
“That’s just remarkable,” he continued. “I mean, this is about as calamitous a thing that could happen to a business that you can imagine.
Asked if the revelation could lead to a criminal indictment, Conway said “Well, of course” before explaining how New York Attorney General Letitia James could get there.
