Far-right congressman and fervent Trump defender Louie Gohmert (R-TX) announced Monday that he’s running for Texas Attorney General in the 2022 midterm election to replace indicted GOP AG Ken Paxton, Politico reports.
Gohmert, who filed a lawsuit demanding then-Vice President Mike Pence to challenge Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, made clear that his primary goal is to fix future elections for his party if he gets elected.
“A priority will be election integrity so that every legal vote counts. Though our current AG has had two terms — it seems he really started working harder after so many of his most honorable and very top people in the AG’s office left, complaining of criminal conduct. If you allow me, I will not wait to be my busiest until after some bad press about legal improprieties. I’ll start boldly protecting your rights on day one,” Gohmert said, according to politico. He also listed other priorities like “unconstitutional mandates,” “parental consent,” and immigration at the southern border.
Gohmert is among several Trump congressional allies who voted against the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.
Before the deadly riot on Capitol hill, Gohmert urged Trump supporters to “go to the streets and be as violent as Antifa and [Black Lives Matter],” in order to force Congress to keep Trump in power.
