Trump rioter Jeffrey Sabol, who is accused of storming the U.S. Capitol and assaulting two police officers on Jan. 6, planned an escape to Switzerland. His plan failed and now he’ll stay in jail, prosecutors said.
After his MAGA-fueled incursion into the Capitol, Sabol, 51, returned to his Colorado home where he fried his electronic devices in the microwave, destroyed any materials he thought could be incriminating, and stashed his guns at a friend’s house, prosecutors said.
According to court documents published by CNN, Sabol then traveled to Boston with plans to hop a flight to Switzerland in a plot to avoid extradition.
District Judge Emmet Sullivan said Sabol was a flight risk and had tried fleeing to Switzerland days after the riot.
“He planned to ski while in Switzerland to make his trip ‘look natural,'” Sullivan wrote.
Last week, Sullivan denied a request from Sabol for pretrial release, saying: “If released, Mr. Sabol may again try to flee or otherwise attempt to prevent his prosecution from moving forward.”
“Mr. Sabol’s willingness to act violently during what he perceived to be a ‘battle’ and a fight against tyranny is extremely troubling,” Sullivan said in the ruling.
“That he acted violently against law enforcement protecting the peaceful transition of power based on a belief that the 2020 Presidential Election was stolen is also very alarming.”
As of Tuesday, 414 people had been charged with participating in the January 6 riot.
