A large, dark bruise on Donald Trump’s right hand is once again raising eyebrows — this time during a high-profile ceremony at the White House. The mark was clearly visible as the 78-year-old President handed the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy to the Navy football team on Tuesday.
While praising the Midshipmen for their winning season, Trump clutched a football bearing his name, “Donald J. Trump,” exposing a swollen, discolored patch on the back of his hand. The same area showed a similar bruise earlier this year during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Now, with the mark reappearing, questions are swirling about what’s behind it.
Dr. Gareth Nye, a senior lecturer at the University of Salford, previously analyzed photos from February. He said, “It does look similar to bruising which is left by IV drip insertion although there is no evidence of IV usage or need.” Nye also noted it could be from a minor injury, aging skin, or even a condition linked to excessive sun exposure.
“Bruising is much more common as you age due to the thinning of skin and weakening of blood vessels,” he explained. “This is more likely to be the case if a person is on blood thinning medication or has been exposed to a lot of sunlight. It may additionally be a completely benign condition called actinic purpura.”
But some experts believe age alone doesn’t explain the severity or frequency of the bruising. The Cleveland Clinic lists another possible cause: blown veins from needle insertion — common in procedures like blood draws or IV treatments. These can leave large, localized bruises, particularly in people with fragile veins.
While the White House recently released a report claiming the president is in “robust health,” it arrives amid growing scrutiny. In official photos from the event, the bruise appeared especially pronounced. Observers noted what looked like an attempt to conceal it with makeup — a detail that only deepened speculation.
Pressed for answers, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt gave a brisk explanation, blaming the mark on Trump’s intense work schedule. She dismissed concerns, framing the bruise as evidence of his “nonstop” routine.
Still, the repeated appearance — especially during public events — is fueling ongoing curiosity.
Earlier that same day, the bruise was also visible during Trump’s meeting with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. No detailed medical explanation has been provided.
At the ceremony, Trump didn’t address the issue. Instead, he focused on praising the Navy team’s dominance on the field.
“Today it’s a great honor to officially present the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy to the 2024 Navy Midshipmen team, a great team,” Trump said. “You won 10 of 13 games, including nine by double digits. You beat Air Force. You beat Army. And now this 170-pound trophy is yours once again.”
He added: “That’s a serious team. We’re not playing games here.”
The event was meant to spotlight athletic excellence — but it’s Trump’s hand that has everyone talking.
