Trump critic George Conway this week appeared on The Daily Show to discuss former President Donald Trump’s legal travails and identified the biggest problem that the former president’s lawyers face in trying to defend him in criminal cases.

During an interview with host Ronny Chieng, Conway explained why he believed that the hush-money verdict against Trump was the correct one and emphasized that Trump’s lawyers’ challenges were exacerbated by Trump’s direct involvement.

“The fact of the matter is that the case was strong from the beginning and the prosecution actually executed perfectly,” he said. “And the defense was kind of messed up because they have a problem.”

“And, pray tell, what problem might that be?” asked Chieng.

“The problem is that they have some lunatic telling them what to do,” replied Conway, referring to Trump. “Every so often, he’d wake up and make a suggestion — these were not good suggestions. He doesn’t really know what he’s doing.”

Many legal analysts have speculated that some of Trump’s lawyers’ most questionable moves during his hush-money trial — including accusing adult film star Stormy Daniels of fabricating claims of an affair with Trump and the decision to call attorney Robert Costello as a witness — were done at Trump’s behest.

Trump was ultimately convicted by a jury on all 34 felony charges leveled against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
