Fox News tried to back up Donald Trump in his fight with California Governor Gavin Newsom. Instead, they accidentally proved Newsom was telling the truth.

On Tuesday, Fox anchor John Roberts went live with what he claimed was a “receipt” from Trump showing he had called Newsom on Monday. The goal was clear: prove Newsom lied when he tweeted, “There was no call, not even a voicemail.”

But the so-called “proof” did the exact opposite.

According to Roberts, Trump called him from Air Force One and said: “The first call to Gavin Newsom was not picked up. The second call Gavin picked up, we spoke for 16 minutes. I told him to essentially, quote, ‘Get his ass in gear and stop the riots, which were out of control more than anything else. This shows what a liar he is, said I never called.’”
Trump then sent Roberts a screenshot of his phone log to prove the call happened.

And yes, the call log does show a 16-minute call with Newsom. But there’s one major problem: it happened early Saturday morning, not Monday.

Roberts confirmed it live:

“Now, granted, this was on Saturday.”

That matters because Trump had just told a reporter on Tuesday: “A day ago. Called him up to tell him, got to do a better job, he’s doing a bad job. Causing a lot of death and potential death.”

Newsom fired back on X (formerly Twitter), saying there was no call on Monday—and Trump didn’t even leave a voicemail. And based on the “receipt” Trump sent to Fox News, Newsom was exactly right.

The call happened around 1:22 a.m. Eastern on June 7, which would be 10:22 p.m. on Friday night in California. That fits with Newsom’s earlier public comments about a brief call with Trump on Friday night. But it does not back up Trump’s claim that he spoke to Newsom on Monday.

In trying to prove Newsom wrong, Trump and Fox News only reinforced his point.

Roberts and co-anchor Molly Line wrapped the segment by calling it “all about the receipts,” while still waiting for a fresh response from Newsom. But at that point, the evidence had already spoken for itself.
