On Thursday, President Donald Trump called on Chief Justice John Roberts and the Supreme Court to step in and fix what he called “unlawful nationwide injunctions by radical left judges.” Trump has faced several legal challenges to his policies and is pushing back against court rulings that have blocked some of his actions.
One of the main issues Trump is focused on is the recent deportation of more than 200 Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador. The Trump administration claims the men are connected to a violent gang, but critics say the evidence is weak.
Another issue involves Trump’s attempt to ban transgender people from serving in the military. A judge recently blocked the ban, saying it was wrong, discriminatory, and based on inaccurate information.
Trump used Truth Social to vent his frustration, claiming these “radical left judges” could destroy the country. He said judges who block his policies “do not care, even a little bit, about the repercussions from their very dangerous and incorrect Decisions and Rulings.”
Trump believes it’s up to government agencies to overturn these rulings. “These judges want to assume the Powers of the Presidency, without having to attain 80 Million Votes,” he said. “They want all of the advantages with none of the risks.”
Trump also criticized U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, who ordered that the deportation planes carrying the Venezuelan migrants be turned around. The Trump administration went ahead with the deportations despite the judge’s ruling, and Trump argued that a president must be able to act quickly in matters of national security, like deporting criminals.
In his post, Trump said, “It is our goal to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, and such a high aspiration can never be done if Radical and Highly Partisan Judges are allowed to stand in the way of JUSTICE.”
Trump directed his message to Chief Justice Roberts and the Supreme Court, urging them to stop these “nationwide injunctions” and fix the situation immediately, warning that the country is in “very serious trouble” if they don’t act. He also claimed that “the danger is unparalleled” and urging Roberts and the Supreme Court to act before it’s too late.
In response to Trump’s criticism, Roberts issued a rare public statement this week, defending the independence of the judiciary and rebuking calls to impeach judges who rule against the Trump administration. “For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Roberts said.
Trump also lashed out at Judge Boasberg in another Truth Social post, calling him a “local, unknown Judge” who is seeking publicity and “usurping the Power of the Presidency.”
The Department of Justice is currently fighting the judge’s order and has suggested it might use “state-secrets privilege” to protect national security information related to the deportations.
The judge has demanded more details from the government and gave them a deadline to respond. He also wants the DOJ to explain why they did not follow his order to turn the deportation flights around.
