A tragic incident unfolded in Indonesia as a tourist, while capturing photos on the edge of an active volcano, fell 250 feet to her demise. The victim, identified as 31-year-old Huang Lihong from China, was exploring Ijen, an active volcano park in East Java, with her husband when the accident occurred, as reported by Hongxing News.
Witnesses recounted that Lihong, while attempting to pose for a photo near the edge of the crater, lost her footing and tragically slipped into the volcano on Saturday. Prior to the mishap, a photo circulating in local media depicted Lihong posing with her leg raised and clouds of sulfur gas behind her seemingly unaware of the impending danger.
The couple had ascended to the summit of the volcano to witness the renowned “blue fire” phenomenon during sunrise.
According to the tour guide, Lihong had initially heeded warnings and maintained a safe distance from the crater’s edge. However, she later attempted to edge closer, inadvertently tripping over her clothing and plunging into the crater.
Rescue efforts were arduous, taking approximately two hours to recover her body from the depths of the volcano.
Authorities have officially deemed the incident an accident.
Lihong’s remains are slated to be transported to Bali before repatriation to China, according to local sources.
